For god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whomever believeth in HIM shall not perish but have everlasting life - Who does the him refer to? Him - Jesus or Him - God? Is it possible Christians have wrongly believed it referred to Jesus and therefore the reason why they worship Jesus instead of god?

Doesn't the bible say Jesus was sent to teach about god and his law? That to believe Jesus you would believe in god and his law? Not that you would believe in Jesus. Jesus is the son, sent to warn and guide, God is the father. You appreciate that the son has lighted the path, but you worship the father. Christians worship Jesus, not God specifically. Jesus was a Jew he worshipped his own father as a Jew, yet Christian's do not worship god as a jew would, they worship Jesus as the savior, when Jesus was the messenger.

you're right, it's ambiguous. John needed an editor and you'd think they could have remedied the problem when they translated it to English from Greek.

No, absolutely not.

First of all, the Bible says that Jesus is God.
But, the main idea here is that you believe in the work Jesus accomplished on the cross. He (Jesus) paid the sin "debt' of man. If you "stop" trying to please God by being "religious" and believe in Jesus and trust in the "work" that God sent Him to do, then you will be saved from your sins. Whats important is what Jesus did, and not what we do. God has "accepted the sacrifice" that Jesus has already made. There is nothing left for us to do but just believe (trust) Jesus to be righteous "for us". If we do not trust (believe) in Jesus, then we will be judged on what we have done and will do. And, God has already told us that the very best we can do will not work. We already know that.

Him Jesus, him God and him the Holy Spirit. Haven't you heard of the Holy Trinity? Most Christians believe they are all one God. Except maybe a few insignificant sects who claim they are three separate entities. Christians don't worship Jesus instead of God. Jesus is God. Merry Christmas XX Betty

Indeed. But it goes beyond this when we compare John 3:16 and John 3:16 as if comparing Law and Grace. John 3:17 notes God did not send his Son to condemn(law) the world, but rather that through him (through Jesus->Christ: the end of the law) the world might be saved(graced). For both peace with God and eternal salvation are notably "through Jesus->Christ"; Which is to allegory say through the cross with law on one side and grace on the other side of J->C the door, the way, the truth.

Not to mention Galatians 4 notes God did not send his Son until law, which had an expiry date (fulness of time for law), expired.

And not to mention 2Corithians 5 notes "that God"(all light and no darkness = all grace and no law) was in "Christ"(the end of the law) reconciling the world (not alienating the world) unto himself (the God of all grace, the God of all comfort, the living God of the living, that God, the only true God of false/true Gods, the only wise God of foolish/wise Gods, the blessed and only Potentate).

Friend: I will never leave thee nor forsake thee... Grace
Enmity: I will forsake you, the city, your fathers... Law
Christ is our "peace" who abolished the enmity(law): Eph 2

Many Christians still mix Grace and Law, which the Bible notes are "contrary things", as contrary as Life and Death, as contrary as Blessed and Cursed. Many Christians still alienate the world God so loved (not hated). And many Christians still focus on "believe", when John 8:32 says the objective is to "know" the truth, which makes you free of believe the lies. For even devils "believe": James 2:19.

The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

No Christians did not wrongly believe it referred to Jesus and even if so they are one so what do you mean? Him refers to Jesus I think but it doesnt really matter if you believe that God sent his only son is what it means not you have to believe in one or the other (again they are 1 in the same so...)

Jesus is God. God is Jesus. Just refer to the tinity. It states that God is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Quite complicated, but if you study it more, you'll understand. God is amazing. It's a fact.

Very good question.
Not all Christian's believe that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are the same person, because, in fact, they are not.
"him" is referring to Jesus Christ's father, Heavenly Father, our Father. Jesus Christ is His Son. The Holy Ghost is a Spirit, but the Father and the Son are flesh and bone and immortal and perfect beings.
They are ONE in purpose, ONE in power, ONE in Glory.
That's where most Christian's get confused.
