That's a tricky question, not being able to see the car in question. I would probably shy away from it personally becuase of the mileage, but if I knew who owned the car and knew all the maintenance was done on time (like that costly timing belt!) I may feel a little better about it. But even if it was the President of Toyota himself that was selling me the car I realize that at 165,000 miles there is no warranty and anything could happen.

If the person has all the maintanence records and the car appears to be well maintained in general, bring it to a mechanic you trust to do a thorough inspection, even if he charges you an hour of labor.

That is a LOT of miles. What's the blue book value of a car that age? I dont think I would personally. I would call up a random car lot and ask what they would GIVE you for a car of that age with those miles... You might be surprised... and may rethink spending that much. Look on ebay. You may find something cool there for that kind of money.

Get it inspected! Some older Toyotas had corrosion issues in the front sub-frame. My kid had one earlier this year and the subframe was rusted out; the engine and trans literally fell out onto the road one day! It otherwise looked and ran fine.

For one that age and mileage in typical condition, something around 1,800 - 2,000 would be more like it.

the blue book value says if it's in excellent condition, even with the miles, it is worth $2200. if the car is in poor condition, it is only worth $1500. they are good cars and you could expect another 100,000 miles out of that car if it has been taken care of. good luck.
