Does thrush go away on it's own when I take away the cause(strong antibiotics) or once it's there does it have to be treated with something from the pharmacy. I take acidophhilus supplements, eating good diet, keep clean, cotton underwear etc. Is this enough for it to go away.

I've had thrush before because I was on several strong antibiotics. Tell your doc and he gives you a prescription, it's nasty kind of like Pepto Bismal but you swish it around in your mouth then swallow. I also treated it with Listerene...nasty as well but you don't have to swallow.

If it is truly thrush (oral candidiasis) you can take acidophillus or lactobacillus to replenish your natural flora (ingredient in most yogurts or your pharmacy has acidophillus tablets in its OTC vitamin supplement section)

To treat active thrush there is a product called Gentian Violet (also available at most pharmacies). It comes in little 1 ounce bottles. Dilute it 1:1 with water and then paint it on the tongue and cheeks with a Q-tip. Be careful! Gentian Violet can make a big mess if spilt.

Now if it a vaginal yeast infection (which the cotton underwear etc. part of the question is suggesting). You can get Vagistat or Gyne-Lotrimin cream from your drugstore. The 7 day is slightly more effective than a 3 day treatment which is more effective than the 1 day treatment. Roughly 89/81/76% respectively.

In the US, Diflucan tablets are prescription only. (The FDA likes to put in it's restrictions because the lay public is too dumb to use antibiotics and antifungals correctly). You would only need 1 tablet of it. If you have a decent relationship with your doctor you can call your doctors office, relate your symptoms and they can call in a prescription to your pharmacy. It is the most convenient way to go.

Thrush is usually something that can be treated easily unless you have a compromised immune system. It can spread into other parts of your body and become a serious issue.

Wouldn't you rather be safe than sorry in dealing with something like this? Proper treatment is always the way to go so yes, you need something from the Dr./Pharmacy.

Thrush is a yeast infection inside the mouth. Do you have that, or an actual yeast infection, in your "nether region"?? If it's thrush, you may have to have a prescription to get rid of it, if it doesn't go away in a few days. They'll give you a suspension liquid to rub inside your mouth. You can also try gentian violet, which you can get from a health food store.
But if it's the other, try Monistat or its generic equivalent first.

acidophilus can help prevent thrush but can't make it go away.

The only viable OTC option is gentian violet. Good luck using it though.

I suggest calling the same doctor that prescribed the antibiotics and ask then for some fluconazole.

Maybe it will go away on it's own, but it is miserable in the meantime.

In Aus we have a tablet called DIFLUCAN which is available from the chemist. One tablet only is needed. Just had a search on yahoo and it is available in the US. Try your local chemist or is available online at Pharmacy direct.
Great product to use especially after taking antibiotics
Cheers Hope this helps

Buy some tampons and NATURAL yogurt. Dip tampon into the yogurt and insert it into your vagina. Antibiotics destroy some of the bacteria needed to keep the vagina healthy. The yogurt contains natural bacteria which will soon have you happy and healthy again.
