Both these breeds' sole purpose in life has always been as lap dogs. The predecessor of the pekingese was thought by the Chinese to ward off evil spirits.

The first guy is probably correct, but I think it's because they are so darn cute and cuddly looking. And a queen fell in love with them as her favorite lap dog.
