Try the public auction. Thats where i got my car at for that amount of money. But it only lasted 8 months.

Look in the papers for a mid 80's Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. There will be no such thing as "good shape". There will be some rust and damage to the interior as well. But if they were taken care of, should be as mechanically sound as you can get for $600. The public auctions will probably not be a good place to go, they often do not let you drive the vehicles before you bid. The vehicles are often dealer stock that they do not want to bother with, or repo'd car's that were driven hard and abused. Maybe try www.craiglist.com in your area. If there is a paper called the "bucksaver" in your area, that is usually full of beaters as well.

Look in the paper ads. Here where I live you can buy a running car for $500-$600 but its not going to be real good condition.

For $600 it's going to be a crap-shoot. Cars in that price range are barely running for the most part. Your best bet would be to look for something that's rather ugly but runs well. At that price anything that looks good will be mechanically shot. Good luck.
