This is just on of the examples. I am a painter. But in the last 2 years I can't concentrate on any of my work. I have the pictures, drawing in my head...It's just that I cant focus on doing it...It's not that I'm bad at painting or anything...oh, no ! So what can I do to focus on my work and loosen up, relax so I can't be distracted by other things ?

Art is work, and work means toiling in the pursuit. What is in your head may never come out on canvas but you should just start painting, and working the paint in the direction that seems right. Dont think too hard about it. Do this in isolation, or with some music playing but do so with as few distractions as possible. Art is a wonderful thing because if you have an idea of what you want the outcome to be, you should let the painting direct you to a final image and don't worry about what is in your head as much as what you see happening on the canvas. That is the more important image and what's in your head may come out eventually, like after 30 or 40 paintings. Don't get frustrated...let the image you paint be the most important driver...you will end up with many wonderful paintings that never could have happened if you hadn't eased up and not tried so hard to recreate the mind's image,

Well, Chuck, you have just discovered one of the most important truths about being an artist; Art hates competition! There is a certain kind of flower that grows in rings in a field but will not grow anywhere there is any other flower. Art is like that. I once took a whole year out of the labour force just to paint and that year I did things I have never done like laundry, plant a garden, build a play area for the kids. I would do ANYTHING except paint because it is the hardest thing we do as artists. I hope knowing that helps you somehow.

It's stress. Stress causes so many problems and for an artist, it can be a real big problem, because we need our minds clear to be able to creative in a good way. Try painting or drawing something when you can't concentrate and just let your feelings go with it. Then save it and when you do find the moment to concentrate on a new project, you can compare the two and you just might be supprised. Try it!

The self-expectation to be creative and to "produce art" can be more of a stress than filing income tax... when I go dry, I try my hand at another creative outlet like photography, writing, or music. Or if I really want to paint and can't, I'll do something crazy with rocks and styrofoam, or go to life drawing sessions, or just make some abstract strokes on paper to give me some ideas.

Or try this - go buy a new medium to experiment with, something fun like oilsticks, some cheap pastels or watercolour crayons. Let loose and go nuts, with no expectations of a finished work.

There are some great books on the market to get you creating again - "Creative Artist" and "New Creative Artist" by Nita Leland, and "Celebrate your Creative Self" by Mary Todd Beam might get your juices flowing again.

Also - try listening to classical or tribal music in the studio - something with no words and plenty of steady tempo. This keeps your left-brain occupied and happy so your right brain is free to create. Walking or driving fills the same need, as does anything repetitive.

Have some fun!

Try moving to a different location. I find that when I constantly create in one certain spot I will get a block. I always cary my sketch book. One day it might be in my studio, the other might be on the porch. You never know. Try it, it did wonders for me. And don't think about the piece so hard just let your creativity flow close your eyes, relax, and breathe slow and deep. I hope this gets you back on track. Getting bored is an artists biggest mind block.
