When my cat notices the pigeons outside (the balcony door is closed) and she can't reach them, she opens her mouth and makes a strange clicking sound. What does this mean? Sometimes she's only flashing her teeth without the sound, all while staring at the pigeons. Is she just consumed with the desire to hunt them and eat them? Or is it something else?

Hi there...cats do this when they become extremely excited beyond mention. They chirp/click/cackle at things they are unable to get at.

Here are some cute videos of cats which are over-excited about seeing something :

Poor kitty !
She is consumed with frustration !
the pigeons are taunting her to death ..
.
My dear old black cat , was plagued by a squirrel in the apple tree in our garden .
The wretched squirrel took a delight, in running up the flimsiest branches .
And poor blacky try as he might, could not reach it
. So he sat there gnashing his teeth, like caster nets .

It was stand off time ,for hours
the squirrel came back every day,

And plagued the life out of poor blacky .( who never gave up , but was never able, to catch that pesky squirrel)

I would say, what your cat is suffering from,
is pure frustration !!!

and the pigeons don't give a damn . LOL!

As everyone else has stated, it is very funny to watch. I have had cats for nearly all my life, and this is common among all of the different breeds we have had.

I read a few years ago, that unlike some animals cats have a hunting side of their brain which is separate from their hunger.

Which is why they never pass up the chance to "pounce on a moving string or the like"

So a cats' hunting side of the brain is always active regardless if they have been fed.

enjoy your kitty.

I dont know what it means, but when my cats see an animal outside that they cant get to, they open their mouths and make a weird clicking/jagged meow type sound. I think theyre either pissed off that they cant get to the animal or maybe its a sound they make when they want to hunt something. Who knows? But its highly amusing either way. They also flick their tails back and forth really hard. Im pretty sure the whole thing has something to do with them wanting to hunt.

Yeah, we've all seen it. That's normal. Cats are natural born hunters so when they see something that moves like the birds, they go into what I call the crazy mode. I have a little kitty that chases it's tail when it sees it move!

I do think this is a 'hunting' behavior. My cat used to do it a lot, and I always said she was "calling the birdies out of the trees"!

we've 2 cats and they are sisters. both are about the most unusual cats I actually have ever seen. the first is a siamese searching cat. She likes to get on the breaking point of fireplace. no longer a reliable element. Little pyro. No candles allowed contained in the abode such as her round. fortunately, our gas heater has a pitcher preserve in the front of it. I actually have seen her sitting in the front of that element better than once with right here face almost pressed hostile to that tumbler. She is nuts. She also loves shoes. I actually have seen her placed her finished head right into a freshly bumped off shoe. probable a fetish element. She also isn't frightened of something, fantastically our dogs. I once went outdoors and talked about our pink healer sitting on the walk with this cat rubbing her head hostile to him. He appeared up at me with a seem that appeared to say, "This became no longer my idea!" Her sister is worse, although. She is a calico and is amazingly secretive. She also likes to secret agent on human beings. I actually were contained in the kitchen and grew to develop into round and talked about purely the sting of her face searching round a nook at me. only a touch of the darkish face and one eco-friendly eye are searching at me. She is truly peeping around the nook. She is the carry close hunter of our cats, even although she is the smallest of our cats. Mice, rats, rabbits, snakes, lizards, birds, countless insects. She hunts and kills all of them. surely, she likes to carry them interior alive and enable them free. Then she will chase all of them day. the perfect she ever did became to one way or the different herald a unmarried of our chickens alive. That had to be between the funniest issues I actually have ever seen. She one way or the different were given it through the cat door. The fowl became no longer damage, purely very, very disenchanted. even as she became youthful, she would carry locusts into the abode and enable them bypass. 20 or 30 an afternoon even as there have been various of them outdoors. We had to brush up a huge pile of them each day. She extensively utilized to carry sticks interior. we would have loved to seen how she navigated a number of those through the cat door. each and every from time to time sticks that were 2 -3 ft lengthy. She must have dragged them through yet how did she save the flap from coming down and catching them? She is likewise properly-known from bringing in pecans, fowl feathers, and small products of trash. those 2 are loopy cats. they are 13 years previous now and are nevertheless the most playful and healthful cats.

My cat does the same thing, and it is really funny!
