Feminism is the social movement which consists of the belief that women are equal to men, deserving of equal rights, pay, and status in society. Feminism is the belief that women are people. There are several different sects of feminism ranging from ultra conservative to downright male bashing. There have been 3 waves or periods of feminism: 1900's when women fought for the right to vote, 1960's when women wanting greater job and societal equality-stop shaving legs, burning bras, etc. , and now-3rd wave- you can do what you want, as long as you want to do it.

During the first wave of feminism Emily Pankhurst was ridiculed for suggesting women should have the right to vote. Much to the embarrassment of her husband, she had to chain herself to the fence and be carted off to prison before anyone even noticed her.
It was refued at first because many of the (male) parliamentarians felt that they wouldn't have a mind of the own and would be bullied into giving their husband two votes, which of course wouldn't be fair to other men. What an insult to decent intelligent women. New Zealand finally led the way, being the first country to give women the vote.

During the second wave of feminism, Leader Gloria Steinman made the comment back in the 70s that feminism is women looking out for women, getting of their @ss, getting heard, getting things done.
Back in those days there was an awful long way to go and all positions power were held by males who had no intention of making it easy for women.
They denied airtime on the radio to a worldwide movement treating it as inconsequential until women did the burn the bra thing. It was then that everyone stood up and listened. even if their intention was to riddicule, worldwide they noticed, discussed it, spread the word - women were throwing off the chain and were on the move.. Why would they do such an outrageous thing.
"Say, all they want is equal pay for equal work. good luck to them for that one! And look, they want to be able to own their own land - I wonder why.."

Well, we broke a lot of ground in those days and feminism to me these days is more about helping to create an environment around myself where women can satisfy their own inner needs in what they feel they need to contribute personally to society.

Me myself, I have things to do, places to go, people to see and a life to live, and it really isn't up to others to tell how I should live that life. I am my own woman, something all men take for granted as their natural right.
.
I would like to see a lot more sisterhood soriety, fem cricket get more air time and for us all to care a whole lot less what cheap magazines think we should look like. Go third wave, there are still of lot of stereotyping to break down, a lot of objectifying to do away with. I'm right behind you all...
