We are all, sadly familiar, with the stories in the media about people who pray (sometimes repeatedly) on children. So as prison / reabilitation does not work should this more drastic method be used?

Castration, both chemical and surgical, have been tried -- usually voluntarily as an alternative to a long or an indefinite prison sentence.

It is not very effective for a number of reasons the worst of which is that the paedophile can get hormone injections (or buy hormones on the Internet) and get 'round the castration. There was such a case a few years ago in Germany; the castrato then violated and murdered a little girl. Her mother shot the paedophile dead in court during his trial.

The death penalty works, but is illegal under Protocol 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for a first offence, and incarceration among Hell's Angels types who would be guaranteed to rape and abuse the paedophile would probably
"fit the crime", in Gilbert and Sullivan terms.

I am one of those who feel that its sad that unfortunately victims becomes victimizers in most cases. You look at about every serial killer of prostitutes and you find the guys mother was a prostitute, While you have to try to keep hate out of it because these people are actually screwed up and have been victimized also, you also have to make sure the vicious cycle doesn't continue AT ANY COST, I don't think castration will stop the thinking process, but don't they have a chemical type castration available for Pedophiles, one thing for sure, all steps must be takes to stop the vicious cycle, whether keeping them in prison or whatever.

Castration will only deal with Male paedophiles, and sadly there are a number of sex offenders who are female. Society seems to ignore this ultimate taboo and assume all paedophiles are male. I agree that prison /rehab doesn't always work, and also that the majority of paedophiles never even get to court, becaue victims are all too often afraid to tell, or testify.

I dont believe that castration is the answer, I dont think that anyone really knows the answer. The worst offenders should be institutionalised for life, but then, that is at our cost !

Paedophile has such a huge range of definition too! It would be good if it were further classified.

What a can of worms !

That may have worked for Fred West, but what about Rose???
Ian Brady would've lost his bits, but Myra gets off with just a custodial sentence!
Not all paedophiles are men.

And what about Gerontophiles? (Elderly fetish) should we castrate them as well?

If we castrate people who sexually abuse the young, we'd have to do similar for those who abuse the elderly, and if that happened then it wouldn't be long before we castrated all sex offenders. Which is not particularly good news for those men who've been wrongly accused of rape by malicious witches who've been dumped or had their affections spurned and want to teach the man a lesson.

It seems like a good solution to a nasty problem, but if we are to remain a civilised society we have to find alternative ways to deal with this situation.

Personally a bullet and a burial is the type of castration I would prefer.
But whatever anybody thinks thier is a thing called the Constitution. And the only thing allowed is chemical castration not physical.

Yeah where appropriate, like 30 year old bloke and 13 year old girl or anythging what so ever with a bloke and a sub 16 year boy, Castration for a first offence and if they find a way to carry on death. Women having relations with a boy is different, if he was not up for it he would not get erect would he so unless it was perverted torture there is no problem is there

Yes! They don't deserve any mercy and should be punished harshly. Those that say it's violent and cruel, think about those children that were violated in a cruel way without any regard to their human rights. Castration should be legal for child rapists and maybe even death. We have to protect our children and not have any pity on these monsters who hide under human clothing because their actions are inhuman.

Castration doesn't stop their desires and it doesn't stop them doing unspeakable things. There is little that can be done. I don't object to paying my taxes to build them centres and pay to keep them locked up for the rest of their lives. Whilst my children are out and about I would be happy to know most of them are safely locked away. I do my best to keep an eye on them, take them to and from their friends houses and don't let them play on the streets and parks but my daughter is getting older now and gets embarrassed that I take her to school and everywhere, it's getting harder to keep her safe as she gets another year older all the time.

It would be nice if simple solutions worked in situations like these .I too am one of those people that say a quick snip fixes the problem but i know better .
This is a mental defect and at some point we may be able to cure this problem .
If your mother was ill and in need of treatment you would want her to have it .
To date no treatment is successful ,but we can hope for a cure to this problem in the future .
Funny thing is they seem to have also been abused themselves and this must be the reason they abuse .
Sounds like a lot of psycho babble and double talk and they all need to be hung by the neck until dead . this will insure that it never happens again .
