Its time for a new fridge. A new fridge is more cost effective than trying to repair your old one. These day Lowes, Home Depot and most other major stores are pretty reasonable for fridges. Good luck.

Replacing the compressor is expensive somewhere around $250. if you have it done, if you do the work yourself you can cut the cost better than half, BUT it requires a quite a bit of expertise and equipment. I would almost be willing to bet it's NOT the compressor? it may be the thermostat or overload, it may just be a simple clean out of dust and if you have an animal cat or dog hair can get clog ed up in the fan under the frig. the fan inside the fridge may be out or froze up (needs lubrication) a new one is best, I would start by looking under the fridge, clean the dust vacuum or blow the dust from the bottom and around the condenser grid, if cleaning don't help start with the thermostat, then go to the overload it's located under the cover on the compressor if bad replace of course there could be other problems like maybe a mouse has chewed through some insulation around an electrical wire, but the age of the frig. should be considered before replacing the compressor. Lots of luck on repairing and Happy holidays.

Generally more than it is worth it will have to be cut out and a new one welded in. YOu will probably get seepage from the new joints and need to recharge the refrigerant at intervals. Generally not worth it. Unless you have a very expensive fridg you want to keep hold of.

If its a standard domestic appliance like most have it's more cost effective thanks to cheap mass production in asia.

Ideally fridges should be made to be more maintainable as they are an environmental disaster. Unfortunately this would mean an increase in manufacturing costs and ultimately the price to the consumer. i.e. it wouldn't sell so until people demand a more environmentally sound product we are stuck with the throw away mentality.

Compressors are expensive to replace, if the fridge is an older model it would probably be best to buy a new one.
Yesterday or the day before my refrigerator/freezer also went out, it is 2 years old, my husband told me to call a repairman. I asked hubby to please tilt the fridge back and let me vacuum underneath it first, Mr Skeptical thought I was crazy but to appease me he did as he was asked. The thing started working and as of right now is cooling. You might want to give that a try and see if maybe that's your problem too. I haven't load the food back into mine yet, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we corrected the problem.

first of all, check to see there is power 120v sent to your compressor, if it's there then it might be your current relay which does not work. If every thing is okay, so it's your compressor bad, it cost you about $100.00 to buy a new one, don't forget to buy a liquid filter drier which cost only $2.00 and replace the old one. Make sure you vacuum the system before you charge in freon.

Compressors usually have a five year warrenty on parts only. If over 5 years old you can figure on $600.00

If your fridge is more then ten years old, toss it and get a new one, believe me, it's time. The cost of repairs does not warrant it.
