i my teens why did i see it as a joke when others thought they were participating in democracy?
i mean you get to vote once every 5 years...not for what YOU want to happen..but for a party who get to decide what gets to happen!
not only that, but when they get in, they are not constrained by the press or the law to abide by their manifesto "pledges". why are they allowed to get away with mere pledges..nstead of being compelled to fulfill their manifesto?
now just like i dont want someone to have sex for me -i dont want someone deciding on my behalf whats good for me....i want a direct vote on every major decision that affects me: that is democracy..government of the people,by the people.
what i want to know is, has real democracy been tried anywhere and was it far less corrupt than the current adolescent democracies?

You are correct. Americans vote for the person who presents the values they hold near and dear, and once that person is in office they are essentially untouchable. Government by the people does not exist, the government and the individuals of which it is comprised are completely independent of the people they rule. They may occasionally take the opinions of the ppl into consideration, but they are not obligated to act on their behalf and therefore rarely do. Furthermore democracy would imply that there are several parties vouching for the offices of the people. There are two central parties allowed in our government and it is a very black and white deal with them. The people are not sufficiently represented and they have no power in their own country. There is a small group of rich individuals with high positions that run the country and are given the authority to make decisions. The people vote once, and forfeit the power they're supposed to have. We are not a democracy, we are an oligarchy posing as a republic. Umm, it has been 'tried' in England. The Monarch of England is now solely a ceremonial figurehead. They're just as corrupt as we are, but the only place I can think of off the top of my head.

A system was tried in Poland. The result was the country lay idol as Russian forces over-ran it. Democracy simply means we all get to vote who represents us, not that we get to vote on every issue.

Democracy results in politicians trying to get elected. This results in making promises. This results in keeping (some of) those promises. This results in more taxes to support social systems. This cycle repeats over and over. I'm embarased to say, but I sincerly believe that what you might call "mature democracy" is actually socialism or communism.
