tickets to a sporting event
tickets to concert or the theater
take him hiking, rock climbing, canoeing, kayaking, horseback riding, parasailing
take him to a really cool restaurant, like the Signature Room at the top of the John Hancock Bldg in Chicago. It's on like the 110th floor!
Buy him a book
Subscription to a fun magazine
buy him a cow at www.heifer.org - seriously, it really helps a lot of people in the World!

Whatever you do, don't get him a tie. I mean... unless he likes ties... But really try to come up with something on your own. Like if you know he likes hats... or if he needs a new jacket. Or is this a guy you don't really know? Then I would say to go with something practical like gloves or something.
If it's someone close to you, do some research, find out what he likes, and then go from there.
