As mentioned by many others tubeless tires are tires without any tubes. Therefore in case of a punture only the tire has to be repaired, if it is repairable. Any sidewall punctures or cuts sometime may not be reapirable or not advisable due to the danger of another failure.

As these tires make the seal on the steel rim it is very important the rim be kept free of any rust or corrosion ( which is the reason for using magwheels, if you can afford it, they are also lighter and therefore give you an additional fuel economy), which means examination and cleanliness of the rim at each tire change. Bear in mind that any dents in the rim caused by going over potholes can result in leaks around the rim.

Tube tires were used in a time when tires and wheels were not as strong, were not as big and did not seal as they do today. Tubeless tires were a substantial technological advance in reliability when they became widely available. Servicing tires became easier and tire/wheel weight theoretically became lighter. One lesser known advantage to tubeless tires is that they produce dramatically less heat when rolling. The greater tire/tube thickness and internal friction between the tire and tube became of concern as vehicle speeds increased.
