Very quickly said: a Trojan is some program doing something behind your back that's not supposed to be doing :), usually hidden like in one form of a thing that's not really is, (try to steal your passwords while showing some nice game, or open an access channel to your computer to let the bad guys get in while claiming to be helping you download cool stuff), That's where the name came from (the Horse of Troy, you know the story !)
Cheers

From my understanding (and I had a few on my PC) is that it is a virus that attacks the Central Processing Unit in your computer. I got them at times when I turned the security on my anti-virus off to download something that I couldn't download with the security set at high). There are various trojans out there, but they are worse than your average virus. The one I had was linked so that everytime I started my computer it shut itself down. I also had one that installed a program on my computer that kept looping (kept running in the background) all the time so that the CPU on my computer was constantly running at 100%, which had two effects on my computer. It made it EXTREMELY slow and if I hadn't dealt with it when I did it would have burnt the CPU on my computer out (so I would have had to get another one - very costly). So all I can say is thank goodness for anti-virus protection.
Just a bit of trivial knowlegde, Trojans got their names from the story of the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. The war had been going on for some time and neither side seemed to be winning. The Greeks decided to trick the Trojans into thinking that they were giving up and going home but really hid and built an enormous wooden horse on wheels and some of the Greek soldiers climbed inside. Soon the Trojans found the horse and a Greek soldier near by (this was part of the trick). The Greek soldier told them it was an offering to Anthena. So the Trojan soldiers pushed the horse into the city of Troy to the Temple of Anthena. The horse was so big that they had to tear down part of the city walls to get it into the city. They left the horse at the temple and had a big party to celebrate the end of the war. Finally everyone fell asleep and the Greek soliders came out of the horse and killed the guards on the walls and signalled the rest of the Greeks to come and invade the city (they were able to get in because part of the wall had to be torn down to get the horse in). There was a big battle and the Greeks won. All the Trojan men were killed, and all the women and children were taken back to Greece as slaves.

A program that promises to do something good or interesting, but covertly may damage or erase files on your computer while you are running it is actually TROJAN HORSE.In other sentence,it is a fake file and does malicious activity without the user's knowledge.Though these are not in virus list still files cannot B repaired. These are independent, starts its infection from computer to computer unlike viruses that replicates from file to file.HENCE deletions of files can only cure the system. CONGRATULATIONS!!l your system is alright.

a trojan, is a virus, plain and simple, its technicaly a file that pretends to be another type of file, so that you would run it.
ex:
you get an e-mail with a file document.pif
the e-mail says to view the information on the file, you open the file, it may show you a picture or something, but its also secretly infecting your computer.

Much as the horse in troy, it is a program that disguises itself as something innocent with a destructive intent. Adware is commonly referred to as a trojan horse, while it may help you to check the weather or "increase your internet speed" or get you free electronics, in truth it often times sits in the background and records everything you do to send to its masters.

Like the name suggests it's something that pretends
to be something else. Usually a program that pretends
to do something you really want while it's doing something
completely different (you don't want) in the background.
