As a former gymnast, us boys didn't wear cups because it was unlikely that you'd bash yourself there, unless on the parallel bars, but still, no. Why else would we need cups for gymnastics? There are mats and cushioned grounds everwhere, as well. We did, though, have to wear leotards.

there are some pieces of equipment like the pommel horse where they could fall and injure themselves...youch!
