Interestingly enough, this question has been answered this week on UK television. It was Pamela Churchill Harriman, daughter in law to Winston Churchill who later married the widowed Avell Harriman. On his death, she threw herself, and the fortune she had inherited, into supporing the Democratic party. She took a young one-term Governor from Arkansas called Bill Clinton and groomed him for the presidency. As a 'thankyou', on his election, she was made US Ambassador to France.and on her death at age 76 she was given a US state funeral.
