I am always brutally honest
I have told personnel directors that when i was 18, I stole from my employer
after a few seconds for it to sink in, I tell them I was also convicted in my heart, and of my own volition I repaid them
I point to the former employers adress, etc, and tell them to call them to confirm the story
they have called the folks I stole from, and they gave a better story, more glowing, about me than I ever could
only time i failed to not get a job was when i really didn't want it

Knowing about the company and being able to tell how you think your being hired would enhance it. Knowledge is king.
Being able to listen and not always talking at the interview.

For me, the key to getting the job has always been the same as the key to getting the girl - confidence.
