Latin america have two different worlds.
Central America and South America. Their problems during these periods are not so much:
1. Large exploration from natural resources, destroying large areas (Ecological disasters promoted by multinational companies);
2. Dictators everywhere;
3. Somekind of Lack of intelectual production (once all freedom were controlled by Militars)
Central America had one huge opposition due Cuban revolution and later missiles crisis, pigs bay and Kennedy.
Som hint about dark side of EEUU interference can be found searching about Generals school in Panama during this period, easily found in internet.
Due the cold war, USA should keep their influence in Latin America. What is interesting is during this period, democratic countries lost their control to the militars. Everywhere could be found ditactors and many countries (almost all) had their people without freedom and all press and TV were controlled.
Too many disapeared and few lucky had their deaths confirmed. It were usual load plains with former political prisioners and trown them to the ocean. Tortures were usual at prisons. Best cases can be found in internet if you search Argentina and Pinochet regime in Chile. Many of these generals from Militar regimes went from Generals School in Panama.
Economic had strong focus in product raw materials to be exported. Minerals, production of Cafe, Latex, Juta and other agricultural products. High devastation. Many multinational companies went to these countries and set up stronghold to explore, like coppermine industries in North Andres region. Some plantations were told to not produce in few countries, like wheat not been possible to grown in Brazil.
For example, we can see differences today: Greater export of Processed/industrialized cofee today is Germany (!). Sugar export market is within few international companies.
Brazil and other countries in several situations give million of hectares to USA companies to exploration (Ford)
After few years, appear fenomenon of State holding control also from industrial production. Everywhere, huge government companies started to explore natural reserves and export without benefit it. Sucking all profit into the government untiol being privatized later 10 years...
Near to 80's, with well stabilshed midia (Press and TV) and small elite in power, countries started to open their democracy again.
Can be found two situations: 1. Open markets before militar leave government (more efficient industries and less corruption) - Chile and Argentina. Industrial Elite is created before Politicians elite and balance is created on a good mood.
2. Open markets after open political government, where corruption spread like fire in cotton. That can be explained, because industrial elite does not exist yet and policitians does not have any strong group to demand infrastructure and better laws.
After all those years, where socialist side were smashed, all intelectuals emerged from bottom and grown up into presidential positions, due lack of competency by politicians. people choose it, once it past ten years of conservator/right side were not efficient to administrate.
Another interesting thing is:
People use to pray with priests to hold comunism beyond countries borders.... That brought such level of fear to socialism to entire society (exception of intellectuals)... that took 10 years to break with it.

thank you CIA; if you want to know about problems in central and south america in this time period; research US and USSR military attaches and advisors, research CIA and KGB actions in these areas; there is a great book called something like "killing hope; CIA interventions since WW2" that is approximately the title written by a former CIA operative clearly disillusioned with that organisation and his government
