I really hate the kind with straight screaming the whole time. Can someone name me some older metal bands that were really popular or not popular but good. And some really bad ones (with the screaming nonstop)? Thanks.

Carcass, Macabre, Dragonforce, Strapping Young Lad, Metallica, Black Sabbath... Some have the growling, some don't but regardless, they are all good to me. Here are some which you might not like...

Six Feet Under, Hatebreed, Cephalic Carnage, An*l C*nt, Dark Throne, Blood Red Throne, Severe Torture, Children of Bodom, Cradle of Filth, Blood Duster, Akercocke, Aborted, Dying Fetus, Ragnarok, Tartaros, Behemoth, Benumb, Krabathor, Krisiun, Lowbrow, Master, Grave, Witchery, Brujeria, Chimaira, Deicide, B*tch Infection, Nailsh*tter, Surgery, Mortician, Zyklone, Vampire Mooose, Today Is The Day, Crisis, Otep, Opeth, Gorgoroth, Dimmu Borgir, Rotting Christ, Defleshed...

Those are off the top of my head.

Good:

Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Pantera
Slayer
Metallica (old)
Sepultura
Megadeth
Black Sabbath
Death
Saxon

All are fantastic metal bands with aggressive powerful styles without all out in-your-face anger, which a lot of new bands think is enough by itself. Pantera are an exception but I think they were the only band that could do it without sounding like frustrated children. Importantly, you can make out what all these vocalists are saying, even though some may have growlish styles, like Sepultura, Death or Pantera. Nearly every new metal band is heavily influenced by one or more of these.

Bad:
Pretty much anything that could be described using "core"

I'll start by saying anyone who tells you bands like Poison, Warrant, Ratt, & Europe are "good" heavy metal- do not listen. That crap is for wimps who can't take real metal. The pretty boy glam crowd....

Ok- Good metal: Black Sabbath -the granddaddies of metal

Metallica- amazing playing, no non-stop screaming. But skip the crap after "And Justice for All". They started wimping out.

Anthrax- thrash metal w/ a sense of NY humor.

Rush- the *fringes* of metal. Might be just right for you.

These are all older good ones for starters.

Bad metal, IMO: Any hardcore/metal band w/ "Cookie Monster" vocals. You've heard em. Just a bunch of ape-like growling.

No one has said Judas Priest yet, they are great, but only the albums with Rob Halford singing. Queens of the Stoneage are a good modern rock band influenced by heavy metal. 'Heavy Metal' and "rock" get blurred. AC/DC and Van Halen are great rock bands but their degree of 'metal-ness' is debateable and really inconsequential. Iron Maiden and older Mettalica are great.
Avoid bands with lots of make-up and permed hair.

Older metal bands that were really popular are Led Qeppelin and Queen. Try listening to cooler sounds, such as pop songs and ballads (ABBA, Madonna, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Cascades, BeeGees, Bread, Backstreet Boys, Paul Anka) and long-ago tunes which never die, such as those sung by cooler-headed America, Matt Monro, Frank Sinatra, and Perry Como. But my favorite remains Nat King Cole. Try him; he's the father of Natalie Cole. Sad that he's deceased, though.-- Graciana
