It is the ultimate school bash and used to be called a dance. The prom bit has appeared in the last few years, God knows from where as everybody knows that a promenade is a walking exercise, not a dancing one. Unless you take your partner out of the hall and go and walk under the stars together of course.
The "promenade" concerts at the Royal Albert Hall were so called because you could go in more cheaply and stand rather than sit during the performance.
