For sympathy,or to hold something over your head even thought they claimed to have forgiving you, these are the two reason I see personally.

It depends on what is in the past i can't change the death of my daughter and I try not to dwell on it but there it is in my heart just waiting to knock me down so I can get up again. Some people dwell or I like to use the word reflect for memories and if there were mistakes made to remember not to do the same thing again

depends what you mean by dwell? it is true some just live in past or feel bitter or upset by it and that does no good for anyone especially themselves. but sometimes you need to think about the past to figure out yourself now. or to understand what happened that you could have done different. you can't change the past but the past can change you, for better or for worse

Good question I often dwell in the past because of a particular person's character I know what she or he is capable of and as the statement goes once burnt twice cautious. History repeats itself

I have no idea but I know several people who no matter what are forever stuck in the "I was a victim" mode. They spend their whole lives sloshing about in the past while the present is all around them. We all have a past and it is what you do with the present and want for the future that makes it worth the effort for me.

I try to think of ways I could've handled things better or what if this didn't happen or why did things have to come to this... you know, try to make sense of it. I hate feeling like a part of my history can't be explained. Like I didn't have control over a part of my life when I needed it most and things changed too much. It's a burning regret and it takes a while to get over it.

Same reason people dwell on the future, and what other people think of them, and other things they have no control over. It's mental compulsion driven by fear and desire.

I live by the philosophy of "Life's too short for would've, could've and should've." It's too bad most people can't let go of the past. They're missing out on today and tomorrow.

So they won't make the same mistakes again.
Some also like to relive the good moments, and it's also about the psychological thinking of people. Some just can't help it.
