In sociology we were told that the queen 'earns' as much in a day as it would take the average man or woman 147 years to earn. It's unjustifiable!

I cannot understand why we keep paying for them to be honest! Did you know that because Family Allowance is a 'Universal Benefit' i.e. everybody is entitled to it, the queen would have recieved money for each of her children too.

It's certainly nothing to do with meritocracy, because the Windsors have done nothing to deserve the magnitude of wealth that they have.

With respect to comments made on communism, I believe you are referring to Michels' Iron law of Oligarchy. It states that even within a Communist republic there is always someone, somewhere that will rise to the top and effectivly become the ruling elite. It has happened in every Communist state.

Marx himself, did not mean for this to happen, he was an economist and not a 'Communist'. Communism was born from others' interpretation of his work.

For a start, they do not leach off the country. They are not payed by the Treasury to live it up, but to carry out their official duties. This was about £37 million last year, only about 62p per person in the UK.
Even so, the vast majority of the Queens money comes from her large land holdings and private investments.

To quote the royal site:

"Head of State expenditure is met from public funds in exchange for the surrender by The Queen of the revenue from the Crown Estate. In the financial year to 31 March 2006 the revenue surplus from the Crown Estate paid to the Treasury amounted to £190.8 million.

Head of State expenditure for 2005-06 was £37.4 million."

As you can see she pays the treasury far more than they pay her. It makes you wonder why they even pay her out of the treasury in the first place if she pays it all back, but the end result is the same, she pays the country more than they pay her, and she bring in tourism.
And, what does she do in this country was bad? She doesn't leach money or sponge off the country, as I have already mentioned, the only people who oppose her are left winged socialists who feel it unfair that someone should have so much power and money by right of birth. Unfair this may be, but taking power away from them will never solve any wrongs, but would more likely cause many as it would need a complete overhaul of our political system, and I don't trust the government to do that. If they were no longer monarchs they'd probably become richer, as I doubt they would feel the need to pay the treasury that surplus revenue, and they already pay tax.
Taking away their money, (which would be illegal, but assuming it wasn't) wouldn't solve anything at all.

To whom do they signify unfairness and injustice?
Have you given up your place of residence to a homeless person yet? If the Royal Family gave everything they own and all of their castles to the poor, it would not make a dent in the problems of the poor. The Royal Family are not monks who have taken a vow of poverty. They represent centuries of British tradition and are to many still an important symbol of British nationalism. You are trying to make them a target in your attempt to promote class warfare. If the Royal Family were to be dispossessed of their position, it should be because their behavior is an embarrassment and because their value as a symbol of national unity has faded to irrelevance. That has not yet happened.

At the risk of getting a thumbs down I must comment on the homeless, poor and needy part.
What most people don't realise is that we need a rich and poor gap, how could society survive and strive to further itself if we had nothing to acheive.
If you want 'all men to be equal' why not try living in a communist state like cuba or imagine what is was like in the soviet union, the same thing happens only on a more extreme level. The result being those in power = extremely rich, the public = extremely poor. At least in this country you have the choice if you want to work hard and further yourself.
You have to remember most people are homeless out of choice, if you ask, despite what people believe, the government will provide you with a roof over your head and money to buy food and clothes to help you get your feet off the ground and get moving in life. Have you ever asked a homeless person why they dont ask for a house, I have and usually get a barrage of abuse off them. There is simply no helping people who wont help themselves.
Look at me, I grew up on a dump of a council estate, my parents always worked hard and taught me to work hard and never to stop trying to achieve, I am now a qualified Engineer and Pilot, I live in a nice riverside apartment in the city centre, I pay my taxes to support those who need help. My parents after their hard work also moved from this estate and now have a nice house in the countryside, big garden and a paid off mortgage.
As for the royal family, they generate quite a bit of money from tourism for the country, a lot more than it costs us to keep them.

A fat lot of use to them are their droughty and uncomfortable castles etc...which cost an arm and a leg to keep for the nation.
Why not have a go at all the millionaires and billionaires that keep a low profile and all their money?Or footballers and pop stars who make a pile through the idiocy of their fans? They live in a great deal more luxury than the Queen, who is frugal and moderate. I suppose you think Posh and Becks are admirable, spending a fortune on luxuries that they don't need.
Do you think that corrupt presidents that line their pockets at the expense of their countries are preferable? The Queen gives much more to our nation than she takes and she represents us with a great deal more dignity than some jumped up Heads of States elected by people who have absolutely no idea of who they are electing.

Your question is ridiculous. Our royal family brings in much more money into the country than what they spend. They live in castles because they are the head of the country and the castles are our most beauitful buildings. the royal family represent our culture and traditions and give us something to put our patriotic pride into when we have leaders as useless as tony blair (although it could be a lot worse remember!!! at least we don't live in some communist wreck of a country!) OUr royal family is the envy of the world. yes there are poor people and rich people. Big deal some people are born with money. Its not their fault they are irhc jsut as much as its not peopls fault they are born poor. No need to hate them. Ok the royal family have their faults but the queen is so honourable, understated in her actions, kind and committed. She has dedication her life to the service of being head of the country. And when it gets all too much she can't roll of in a drunken stupor to the nearest dingy club and dance like a chicken. She has to remain respectable. There will always be rich and poor but we are lucky enough to live in a country where there are chances and oppertunities for people from all differnt walks of life to develop and succeed. Obviously there are some very unfortuante cases of, for example, single mothers with kids being homeless but usually they are housed. People are homeless often beacuse of drugs opr personal problmes which are always going to exist if we had a royal family or not. It is people like oyu that are wrong with modern society who want to break down traditions for the sake of looking like some martyer for the 'poor and needy'. If you are poor and needy go and do something about it like go to a charity or come to mine for some food and a cup of tea. However i very much doubt that you are. Go and live in a mud hut in an african villiage for a week and you will probably find a lot more to complain about than our royal family which are the head of our country, which i still believe is great, even with all its faults.

great answer andy b,these loony lefties who want to get rid of the monarchy wont like your answer,,and its like this ,if all the wealth of the uk was split evenly between each person after even a few days there would be some richer than other ,after a month or two even more, after 10 years or so then it would be the same as it is now, some very rich and some very poor, its just the nature of things.

I can't remember the last time I saw such a low, loaded question!
"The people are homelss, poor and needy" ??? This is Britain not a third world country. We have people flocking to this country from Poland and other countries - they see it as the land of milk and honey. So who are all these homeless, poor and needy you are referring to? People too idle to switch off their satallite t.v.s, get out of bed and find a job???
The Royal Family may have the best of everything, but you cannot call the idle!!!!!!!

They have their faults but I'm not sure that they should be blamed for everything. Many of the the film/music etc "stars" are as rich as them - do they give money to the homeless? No they just go on coillecting $16 million per film.
