There is no way to prevent a roach from getting into a cupboard if it wants to. There are things you can do to discourage them, though. For starters, there can't be anything available for them to eat inside it. All open food, stuff like cereal, sugar, flour, and the like, need to be in closed plastic, metal, or glass storage containers. If there is nothing to eat, they tend to leave the spot alone. You can't even leave the baking soda open, they will eat that too.
If you are discovering roaches in the cupboards, you have them in places you have't even thought about as well. Home remedies are okay for repelling the odd roach that gets carried in, but once they have a hold and start reproducing to the point you see them in numbers, in places like cupboards, or in daylight, you have a serious problem no home remedy can handle. The sprays from the stores won't cut in in that situation either, and will cost you a fortune in the long run. It is actually cheaper, easier, and more effective to hire a contract killer to come in and do the job professionally. That way you kill all the nasty buggers all at once, and are done with it. That's the trouble with the other stuff- if even one female roach is left alive, no matter how many you managed to kill, in no time at all you are crawling again. Save yourself the hassle, smell and trouble, and just hire a professional exterminator. Then use the home remedies and closed containers to keep it from coming back again.

Take boric powder and wheat flour at the ratio of 2:1, knead well using very little water, make small round pellets and scatter them in the cupboad. wheat will attract the cockroaches and boric powder will kill them.
One drawback! Every weak you will have to make new pellets till you kill them all.
Cockraches can fly and so can invade your home at any time from any place nearby where they breed.

Boric acid, it is very effective when used properly for killing cockroaches and most other insects. You can also get a house lizard, they are natural enemies and will eat them. More information at http://tinyurl.com/ofxkk

I read that bay leaves will repel roaches. I have a bay tree so I crush/tear and scatter them in my cabinets.I can't say for certain if it works but I have no roaches.
