The main problem with prostitution, legal or otherwise, is price gouging. Whores are almost as bad as doctors.

Agreed. By making Prostitution legal it can be regulated. Rules can be put in place to protect the public health such as weekly screening of prostitutes for STDs. Warnings to every prior customer of a prostitute who tests positive for any STD. Reduction in the prison population and resulting reduction in the cost to run the prisons. Reduction in law enforcement costs. Increased collection of taxes since now all the money made by the prostitutes will be subject to federal, state and local income taxes. Special zoning for "red light districts" to keep prostitution away from our children. Their are a host of reasons to legalize prostitution if only our legislators had the courage to do it.

Most of the people that answered this are correct, but I will add the following:
1. Prostitution has lowered the molestation and rape problems. Not stopped, but lowered.
2. Better control of hygiene and health if legalized.
3. Additional source of income for the states that legalize it.
Strong religious oriented states will not pass prostitution due to obvious reasons. Same with gambling.....

Yes, this has worked well in other countries (Netherlands, Germany) and also works in Nevada. Unfortunately, most of America is still puritanical and deeply scared of sexual expression and nudity. Until those beliefs change, law makers will be loathe to change the prostitution laws in most states.

Makes sense to me.
Mandatory use of contraceptives would help curb the spread of disease. The fact that prostitution is illegal means disease is MORE likely to spead, so the person who wrote saying legalizing prostitution would spread disease is being shortsighted.
You take away the black market and you take away a lot of crime. You take away pimps who abuse and kill their girls and you replace them with employers who must provide health insurance.
Really, the only people who can be completely against this are people who are morally against it, and law absolutely should not be made for moral reasons alone, especially when that law (i.e. making prostitution illegal) takes away the rights of others simply because your religious views disagree with them.

Iys legal in Nevada and keeps a lot of counties in the black because truckers are a horny lot. Also, the girls get weekly medical blood tests to insure they are disease free. As do the clients...

There are enough STDs in the world, why give the STDs an interstate of abilty to infect as many people as possible.
If you want AIDs go ahead and find a corner whore and go to town.
