Why would they do that? They already have the benefits without any of the responsibilities!

I'm really not sure.
Do they pay any taxes? If the do normal trade with the U.S., and are protected by them, but don't pay any sort of taxes, that means they're getting a free ride, and they should become a state, or at least do like every state does.
However, if they're in the same situations as a state is, but just aren't called a state, then I suppose it's up to them if they want that title. Of course, if they ever want a voice in Congress (there is a liaison from Puerto Rico in Congress, but he can only listen & cannot speak on the floor or vote), they'll need to become a state.

I think that they should become a state, or back away from the teet of the american monies...
Puerto Rico has been enjoying the benefits of being associated with the United States, and has avoided the responsibilities of that association.

Good for Puerto Rico. Irrelevant to the U.S.
I don't think it would change anything in the continental US except that they will actually start paying taxes (which they don't now) so I guess it will even be good to the U.S.
To be honest the only thing that bothers me is how would they arrange the stars in the flag.. being 51 an uneven number haha

That is not for us (American citizens) to decide, but for the citizens of Puerto Rico. They have been given the opportunity many times, but have chosen not to become a state. As a US Territory, they receive protection from our military but are self-governing. How much better could they have it?

No way. Puerto Rico is a spanish speaking, latin american nation. Do we want a Quebec ,a Palestine or a Northern Ireland in our own backyard as a State? No way. Let them have their freedom as an independent country, everyone deserves to be free!

I think it should be a state. They take advantage of welfare, U.S. citizenship, and can come here legally anytime. They are practically a state and I don't know why so many refused to become a part of the country that has helped them so much. Puerto Rico should become a state if not, then why are they considered U.S. citizens?

I think that time has come. It's been 48 years since any new states were admitted to the union. Adding Porto Rico would give us something to celebrate for a change.
