The distance between being very comfortable in the water, and being in a state of panic can be very short. More and more exposure increases your control, and enables you to handle more scenarios. However our survival mechanisms, are never far from being very quickly switched on(flight/fight) , and this strangely often causes us a alot of problems when in the water. Scuba divers often talk about an effetc called 'perceptual narrowing' where your mind becomes so focused on the fear that you are unable to save yourself, even if saving yourself is very easy(like inflating the bouyancy vest your wearing).
The water is a fanstastic thing, skills and exposure, greatly increase your ability to appreciate its magic.
Yeah Id love it, if someone developed a cheap, but effective sharp repellant. The current electrical field idea would be good, as long as it actaully works, and is affordable(both of which I wonder about).

Well I must admit I don't suffer from hydrophobia but I don't like sharks of any kind! Nor box jellyfish, creatures that live in the ocean seem to be far more poisonous than land creatures, don't they? I wonder why that is? As for the fear of water I must say, I think I would freak out if I was left far out at sea, say falling off a liner or something, being marooned would not be too bad, not at first, anyway! Have a good day!

I am fascinated by sea life & the sea in general, although It terrifys me to swim in the sea. I often wonder what is swimming around me & worry about being bitten or stung. i will only swim in very clear water where i can see to the bottom. I wish I could enjoy the water & sealife without the worry of anything harming me. I must say though that I have never been hurt by anything in the sea but it has still always been a fear of mine.
I went snorkelling in the carribean quite recently & instead of enjoying the beautiful fish & coral I was in a state of panic the whole time. I thought it would help to overcome my fear but didnt. I suppose its the fear of the unknown. Anything could be in the water & you wouldnt know until its too late.
I will never stop trying to overcome the fear due to my fascination with the sea!!!

I'm afraid of deep water, especially deep dark water, like the ocean. I'm not even fond of a deep swimming pool!
I know it's crazy but I just feel like there is no bottom when I'm in deep water. That I might just go down and never reach the bottom.
If and when I go to the beach I never get in the water farther than ankle deep!
Once I read a book about the Titanic and it had a picture graft of how far down she was and I almost freaked! She was resting 2 MILES down!! Something like that gives me nightmares!

I am a very strong swimmer so during the day I am fine, but when its all dark and your looking out to sea - that to me is awful, possibly the most concerning phobia I have. I mean, there could be ANYTHING going on out there in all that water --scary!

I'm terrified of getting inside a shower cubicle. It scares the heck outta me, the thought of the showerhead and me having no control over the water coming out above me. I'm scared the water will suddenly become boiling or the taps will just suddenly stop working or something, and the water will just keep on coming and i'll have no way out!
it's the bathtub for me!!

I don't like to have my head under water. I hate the sound I hear and no being able to open my eyes. That's when my imagination starts going wild.
I don't like when I can't feel the ground underneath my feet.
But I love to swim and I love water
