I think the emotional/psychological trauma is what is being referred to when it comes to abortions.
You're right, though, giving birth is more physically traumatic.
But there is physical trauma in an abortion. There is scraping and suctioning occurring. Plus, the cervix gets artificially dilated in order to suck the fetus out. Scar tissue on the woman's organs can develop from the procedure causing some women to have a difficult time conceiving later on. I've even heard of cases where some of the fetus wasn't fully removed during an abortion and the woman having to undergo a second procedure to get it out.
Sounds traumatic to me.

Both are physically traumatic, but our bodies were never intended to have abortions. They were however intended to give birth. Abortion is a medical procedure not a natural one. My next door neighbor endured a very tramatic D& C (abortion) her fetus had stopped developing and the heartbeat had stopped as well. Despeite being given several shots and oral medication her body did not miscarry the fetus on it's own and she had to go in for a D&C. The doctor made a mistake and punctured her uterous whie hitting her intestines as well. She ended up with major surgery to repair the intestines, her uterous and she has yet to be able to concieve again 2 years later. This just happened 2 years ago so please don't say that is something that happened in the 'olden' days. She also had an excellent doctor as her husband is a cardiologist and she went to one of the best ob's in our area.

Abortion can lead to scarring, cervix damage known as an incompetent cervix (which can result in spontaneous miscarriage, sometimes the cervix actually has to be sewn closed) it can also lead to endodmetrial adhesions, a bad infection may even leave you unable to concieve again at all.

While childbirth in itself is not without complication childbirth was meant to be a natural occurance, abortion is a man made procedure.

Also you will hear some but very few women who say after giving birth to a 10 lb. baby that they will never do that again, however many women resign never to have an abortion again after going through the procedure.

The emotional and psycological trauma from having an abortion can haunt some women the rest of their lives.

It is bloody painful to have an abortion. They suck or tear your baby apart inside you, so you can see blood, pieces of legs, arms and so on being pulled out of you. A pregnant woman's uterus is sealed very tight with a mucus plug. If something is inserted inside through that plug and tight cervix, how do you think it feels? Plus you may be scarred for life and never have a baby again- abortion can injure the uterus. When you have a baby, big or small, you will be rewarded with a cry after everything. I am not sure if babies are that big, they are usually much less than 10 lb. Even if the baby is born dead (stillbirth) there is a body that you can cry over and bury. With abortion, your would-be child is chucked out along with the needles and tubes they used. BTW- never had an abortion but know those who did.

Its the emotional trauma not the physical trauma that we are referring to. For some women this may not be a problem, but most women possess an inborn sense of mothering and we begin to build a bond with our children as soon as we know we are pregnant. The fact that for whatever reason a woman decides to terminate her pregnancy, doesn't mean that she has not already formed feelings for her child and to some extent she goes through a greiving process after terminating the pregnancy. Its different for most guys, they don't form a bond until it becomes real for them, which can be when they see the baby move or sometimes not until the child is born. I hope this helps you understand and be more understanding in the future.

I have had an induced miscarriage at 11 weeks(baby was dead but wasn't coming out, but this method can also be used for abortion) and also given birth, with no pain meds, with pitocin (which increases strength of contractions and makes labor much worse). My baby wasn't 10 lb- she was only 8. A 10 lb baby is actually quite rare and usually a mom who has a baby that large has uncontrolled or poorly controlled diabetes.

Anyway, my induced miscarriage was much more painful physically than my natural labor. The recovery was easier from the miscarriage, but I was in total agony from the induced miscarriage whereas the labor/delivery was pretty hard but quite manageable (after all, I got through that with no pain meds. With the induced miscarriage I was begging for morphine, and fortunately they gave me some).

The main trauma of an abortion is indeed the emotional side. The pain of an abortion is that of a miscarriage. Severe stomach cramps, heavy bleeding etc....
It is a very traumatic experience and one I could never subject myself to. x

Well, I haven't had an abortion but I have had a 9 lb plus baby! Having a baby is always a strain on your body. But I'd rather have a baby than an abortion.

To be brutally frank about it I consider abortion on non-medical grounds to be murder and should be punishable by law.
My daughter has just given birth to a near 10lb baby boy after a long and extremely difficult pregnancy and labour, but the trauma of all that was forgotten as soon as she saw her son.
