Is there an easy fix for this? The cover is opaque, so I can't check for actual spin of CD, altho spinup sounds of player seem good. The window shows "track 01", then "no disc" when "play is pressed. I've checked for grunge on laser lens- OK.
CD player on Sony boom box has not been used for a year; is desired to preview CD's for ripping to HD.

I know you say you've checked for grunge, but I would clean the lens anyway with alcohol rub. It sounds like it's having problems reading the CD, rather than a mechanical problem.

I purchased a package of 50RW CD's for around 40 CDN and at least 6 or 7 gave me this message. Wish I could say you would have better luck with the more expensive CD's however although they may have a higher percentage of successful burns, the CD is corrupted in about the same amount of time. Now, it could also be that you do not have a player that reads rewriteable CD's but will successfully play retail CD's. I have an old player and with perseverance, i.e, keep stopping, apply slight pressure to various points of player lid and basically become more stubborn than the machine. The players that accept CD and CDRW format only last about a year before they no longer work (mine is a Sony as well). In my experience, casssettes and the mid or high end machines had a longer life span, whether purchased or home recorded. The days of buying an artist's music once or twice a lifetime (with reasonable care and maintenance) are long gone - now your lucky if your CD is still playable after 6 mths. And they wonder why ppl pirate - it is not so far fetched to have to buy the same CD every 6-8 mths - at 14-29 cdn that can get quite expensive.

CD drive lens needs cleaning. Sometimes you may not able see the dirt on lens. But you can use soft cotton to clean the lens, and who knows, it might just start working.
