It's a simplisitc question, but I'll do my best to answer it. The features that make any particular notebook computer or computer line the "best" vary from person to person. What you need to do with the laptop, your budget, the computer's availability, ergonomics, operating system and any specific requirements all determine what is "best" for you. Also, many name-brand computers are built by OEMs who produce wholly-similar computers at reduced cost and/or different features and warranties.

If you are a Mac person, then you really have to stick to Apple MacBooks and MacBook Pro computers. If a used computer will work for you, that opens up further options.

In the PC world, the Lenovo (formerly IBM) Thinkpads are very highly regarded. Dells, HP (Compaq), Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu, etc have their benefits, price points and critics. I don't have a high opinion of Gateway computers but that's an option also. Then there are the Taiwanese computers, Acer, Averatec and the like -- some excellent bargains there for the price/feature conscious.

If you need a very rugged computer that can survive most things, I'd point you towards Panasonic Toughbooks, although they are pricey, I find that Son't ultra-small and portable laptop computers work very well and squeeze a lot into a small space, but their technical support is close to non-existent and there is little support for anything other than Windows XP (although I'm sure they will support Vista beginning next month.) Gaming notebook computers require a fast processor and excellent video card -- attributes normally found only in the bulky and heavy deskop replacement computers.

Don't be afraid to ask around for more opinions, try to make a list of what's important for your needs and budget, and try visiting a local big-box computer store to check out different brands and the feel of their machines. Good luck.
