12/01/06 "AP" -- -- -A record 7 million people — or one in every 32 American adults — were behind bars, on probation or on parole by the end of last year, according to the Justice Department.

Of those, 2.2 million were in prison or jail, an increase of 2.7 percent over the previous year, according to a report released Wednesday.

More than 4.1 million people were on probation and 784,208 were on parole at the end of 2005. Prison releases are increasing, but admissions are increasing more.

legalize drugs, like they did for alcohol after banning it. Prohibition is what fuels crime. Getting high should NOT be a crime.

A criminal is a criminal and because our system allows for rational discussion and for laws to be challenged and changed there is no excuse. You don't like a law, then you become a lawyer, a politician, a writer, a movie maker, or simply an advocate and you work to change it. You have no right to use force against others except in self-defense.

that is absolutely shocking. but we mustn't foget that in a country of 300 million people and no doubt more Amerindians who aren't "registered" this is quite a small number.

i think we need more education initially, and then more prisons, and when someone is sentenced to life they serve their life, not getting released 12 years later as happens in Britain. I'm afraid law breaking is part of life, as much as we all wish it wasnt.
