learn how to stop....you have taken the first step by admitting your problem......seek some help if you really want to stop, you don't need to lie to impress people or get friends, just be yourself and think before you speak

Tell your friend that jeopardizing your friendship has been a wake-up call for you and made you realize that you are a compulsive liar. Tell the friend you are sorry and promise not to lie to them anymore. Consider seeing a counselor to explore ways of becoming more truthful. If you don't get help for this problem you will continue to ruin good friendships.

I understand completely I did the same thing and once in awhile it peaks up again. It's a disease that noone talks about but you are not alone.
I would continue to lie even though I could tell the person didn't believe me.
What I did was acknowledge my problem, like you are doing. Told my closest friends I knew I had the problem because of course they knew it and asked them to help me stop it by calling me out when I start lying, they accepted this and it improved our friendship.
But I always make a point to think about what I'm saying BEFORE I start to talk and make sure I know it's the real truth as it's coming from my mouth and you know what? I found I made a lot more friends easily and they liked me for me, I didn't have to lie about ANYTHING anymore.
Good luck!

Time, perhaps. But if you really are compulsive, then you are constantly going to have to face these problems. Remake yourself to deserve good friendships.

Also, find out why you lie. Address the root cause. Learn how not to need what you get from lying. Get it some other way. You seem smart, you can figure it out.

Just try and be honest with her and hopefully she will believe you. Explain to her why you did/do the things that you do and tell her that you value her friendship. Then leave it at that there isn't really much you can do after that, the ball is then in her court to decide whether she still wants you in her life

tell the truth. the truth is almost impossible because everybody has a skeleton or 2. the best way is to talk to your pet, a dog maybe, and always tell it the truth. then you will start getting used to doing it and it will go from there. sounds strange i know but it will work, just give it time. it is hard to break a habit of a lifetime.
