At the school that I received my undergraduate degree from, sororities and fraternities were a big deal! Of course that was some time ago. Now that I am back in school the variety of sororities and fraternities that are available to become members of have changed...primarily because I received my undergraduate degree from a HBCU and am now attending a Catholic Jesuit school. There is ot a chapter of my sorority on the campus at this time, but I do associate with the members of many of the other fraternities and sororities. I choose to do that at this stage in my life b/c I am all to tired of seeing/hearing about chapters that are suspended or loose their charter due to hazing and abusive pledging activities. My solution for my little corner of the world is to be actively involved with the other greek men and women on campus so that I can set an example of how things should be handled and of how we should carry ourselves and of the examples that we should be setting for the student body vs taking advantage of the faith and trust that is placed in us by people who may wish to become members of our organizations. I am also very involved on a city-wide level with my sorority and with other members of other greek letter organizations so that we can attempt to effect some sort of positive changes in the realm of intake policies and procedures, to see that they are done safely and with the safety of the candidate and reputation of the organization well in tact.

at southern illinois university being in a frat or sorority is not that cool. the majority live off campus in apartments or rental housing. i have not met very many people who like frat boys and sorority girls, mainly because they are all on daddy's ticket. i think the greek society at siu must stay pretty much within themselves, because i have yet to meet any of them.

however, across the river we have southest missouri SEMO, where i have friends attending, and the word is that you are nothing if you are not in a frat or sorority.

Sorority usually means you have to be part of something and can't think for yourself and you have to buy your friends. They also aren't the brightest students and drink too much.
