No, they're just catering to their market - stupid people. If it wasn't what folks wanted to watch, they wouldn't put it on the air. The cure - stop watching it!

I don't think they have to try very hard. We are a bunch of sheep. Why do you think all the Brangelinas and Benifers are so popular? It's because as a society, that's what people want to read about. Apparently. Not me or you, but in general I would say so. If their were no demand for it, they would quit already. If you really want to take a stand and get the publications to give us a little more credit, why not start a boycott of all magazines who print that crap and get the word out? I would sign it in a minute. The media only dishes out what the consumers of the world want to see.

Rupert Murdock is a very powerful man.
He controls the news.
Media people make money from reporting "stories" reguardless of the level of its credibility. If the rating go up or more papers sell then it allows for higher compensation. The truth is irrelevant. Nobody listens to retractions.
We are individual or cows. You make the choice of what you want to be.
The cure is to keep an open mind and try to see the forest from the trees. Just because they say they have intelligence does not prove they do!

I don't think that it's so much that people or the media are stupid, but as I heard someone else say, people are becoming more and more "lazy brained." And, the media only gets away with what people allow them to do. If there was not a demand for that kind of "news," then the media would stop airing such stories. However, the media is in the business of selling ad space, and to do that they must grab the attention of as many people as they can. Unfortunately, to grab so many people's attention it takes lots of blood, guts, gore and controversy. It truly is a sad state of affairs that we've come to as a nation...

You are right, the media is very much controlled in USA. To your astonishment, I live in Egypt (a third-world country) and people are much more open to the world than you are.. why?
Because in Egypt people are allowed to put sattelite dishes and receivers to receive channels from all around the globe from different Satelites such as Hotbird, NileSat, Astra, etc..
The solution at your place is to try to get the satelite receiver system dominant over the cable system, instead of being much more expensive.
OR
Just subscribe in international News channels such as Al Jazeera for the middle east, and others. CNN & BBC are not enough :)

I agree with you about being sick of the coverage of "celebrities." I don't watch that much tv, but even when I watch the evening new which should be reporting the important news of the USA and the World...I still see those stories sneak in. I prefer to watch the BBC news, which seems to be more NEWS less nonsense.

Nobody can make you into anything you don't want to be unless you allow them to. And as for "stupid Americans", that's modern society. It isn't just America who has their cutesy celebrity couples.
Your question made me ponder about a generic world. It appears there are a few middle east countries who don't like our way of thinking, but what would we do if everyone thought alike? ;)

Do we talk about the end of a civil war in Angola or do we show a water-skiing squirrel?
Of course they think you're stupid. And the cliques in power just sit back and do their dealings unchecked while we watch the sports report.

The ones on the Jerry Springer show are the AVERAGE Americans! Below average can't get on the show. They're at home watching that sh*t, getting ready to go out and vote.
