Assuming this is an automotive question, Over heating could be an indicator, but not nessecarily. Are there coolant puddles on the ground where you park? If it`s an older model with a fan on the pump you could try grasping the fan and see if it has any play up and down. If not, consult a mechanic.

if it is a cambelt driven pump the only telling sign is water dipping out of the cambelt cover ,also you may get a high pitch whine from the cambelt cover area this whine is normally bearing failiure in the waterpump its self ,if its a car with a pump external on the engine ie driven by a v belt they put a hole under the pump drilled in the casting so that when the pump starts leaking it will show thats it leaking , tell me what car is it

If your car overheats, and you still have coolant in your raidator, it's most likely your water pump.
