They use them the day after Thanksgiving and a few days before Christmas. That's it. Wal-Mart does this because they can do whatever the hell they want. They know it doesn't matter how many cashiers they have working, YOU'LL still shop there. It's true! Also, as a former Sam's Club employee, I know that cashiers call off EVERY DAY. You can count on 1-8 cashiers calling off every single day. And who can blame them? I certainly would rather shoot myself than be a cashier at a Wal-Mart getting paid crap to listen to a bunch of whiney jerks. In addition... Wal-Mart provides low prices, and to keep their prices low, that means hour cutbacks for workers and not running registers to keep the electric bills down. But you'll still shop there.. and so will I and so will millions of others.

LOL!! I worked for that company for a few years, here's the deal. They work their employees to the bone, ever heard the term 'less is more'? Well, they push these poor people to the break, less people on the time clock + more sales = more money in their pockets. All the extra counters are for the holidays, the only time that they really staff the store. Next time you find yourself in a long line, get the attention of an employee and ask to speak to the manager, he/she will get the lines moving (even though they would rather not) the last thing a manager for wally world wants is a complaint sent in.

I go to Wal-Mart in Kingston, New York. There is rarely a wait. I love that store. Great sales clerks, warm, friendly, professional eager to assist.
Most of them know where to locate store merchandise. If they don't know, they ask someone and return immediately with an answer. I wish other retailers trained their staff as well as Wal-Mart.
