i have always known Latin came from the roman catholic church, and for Europeans, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, and so on, known for Latino. Back in the days Mexicans, Puerto ricans, all of south of American people were called Hispanics, now there preferred to be called Latino. Where did this change come from? so who are the real Latinos?

The term "Latin" was used by French imperialists in the 1860s in order to create a justification for their failed attempt to conquer Mexico. They thought "They were colonized by the Spanish. They now speak Spanish. Spanish came from Latin. Our language came from Latin. See, we're related!"

Over time, the term "Latin America" was applied to all the Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries of the Western Hemisphere because its a suitable umbrella term.

And, in the end, using Latin America, people from there began to refer to themselves as "Latinos" in order to assert who they are.

The etymology of the term is interesting because it begins as a word based on imperialist designs and yet it ends up being proudly appropriated and freed from imperialist contraints.

Just because you speak spanish doesn't mean you have a large amount of Spanish blood as alot of mixed natives think. I myself only have less than 1% spanish blood. Hardly enough to consider me "hispanic" even though my dad's side spoke spanish. I speak english but would anyone consider me "English or Brittanic" ? Heck no because I don't look like either. And how about the spanish speakers that speak ENGLISH? What about that? Time to start calling ourselves "Native Americans / American Indians" because our native ancestors did NOT come from Europe regardless of the mixed white blood as long as you look "native". There's alot of whites calling themselves "native americans" and alot of natives calling themselves white. We have to turn this around.

My wife prefers to be called either hispanic or latino. Basically, from what she and our hispanic friends talk about, anyone who is a decendant of Spain and mixed with a native American (from centeral or south america), you are Hispanic or Latino which to many hispanics both labels are pretty much the same thing. Or you could be mixed with Spanish blood with native American genes and white blood. Or another mix that still has primarily Spanish blood in that race mix.

Just like if your primarily a decendant of African slaves, your black, regardless of if you have a little white or native american blood in you.

Latino is a more respectful way of saying we are own people with the respect of being a giant majority in the U.S.
