The truely needy and homeless people are being given a bad rap because of the physically fit and able bodied BUMS that litter the streets of major cities.

I have given money to people on the street who have asked for some and I have also bought them food. I do find that the best way to help out is to contribute to the local food bank. I also donate any clothing that is still in decent shape to local charities that will not sell it for profit. I don't know who is really homeless and who is a "bum" faking it, I just know that I would not want to be homeless. No, not a liberal by far, just was close to that situation as a child many years ago and remember where I came from and appreciate anything I have now.

We don't know which are truly needy and homeless so if we help out some on occasion, hopefully we will have helped out at least a few of the honest bums.

It's the attitude of our heart when we help, not whether the person we give our money to is a scam or not.

Don't judge another without walking in their shoes first.

this is the problem ...is the person you are looking at really a bum or someone that knows his/her way around to get a weeks pay in a matter of hours?
do you have any idea how much some of those panhandlers make in a days time? i think if you did you would just fall over !
so my answer is a NO!
and i work my BUM off for a living!

Some people might look fit and able bodied but are damaged in spirit, so that they cannot do what they need to do to find their place in society. Others are merely experiencing an alternative alternative lifestyle.

I don't know about the social system where you live, but here in Australia everyone is entitled to government assistance if they find themselves in an unemployable position, and there are many people paid to help them.

Yes. I give money to "bums".
I have to drive thru Detroit every night to get home, and I keep a dollar in the cubbyhole at all times just in case I run across someone that needs it.
My sisters, my parents, and my husband hate that I do it because for all intents purposes, it's unsafe.
And yes...they might be picked up by a limo later that night and whisked away by their driver to their home out in the hills. They might just be saving up for a bottle. And they might actually just be waiting for a sucker like me.
But they might actually be hungry, they might actually be thirsty, and I might be the one reason they got something to eat today.
I sleep better knowing that, than to think otherwise.

Sometimes I do, but there are some bums that you see quite often, these guys keep asking for money time after time. I never give them money more than once. If they look like a wino or junkie, I don't give them anything!
