The mosquito larva is a predator, living off small organisms in water.
Contrary to popular belief, adult mosquitos live more off palnt sap than blood.
Don't know maximum altitude, but I've been bitten by mosquitos at about 3400m above sea level.

In maximum lady mosquitoes, the mouth areas type a protracted proboscis for piercing the exterior of mammals (or each so often birds or perhaps reptiles and amphibians) to suck their blood. as antagonistic to a syringe's many times gentle needle, the mosquito proboscis is very serrated, which leaves a minimum style of things of touch with the exterior being pierced — this reduces nerve stimulation to the factor the place the "chew" isn't felt in any respect, this is frequently the case (see the Mosquitoes and well-being section under for an evidence on the swelling.) The women require protein for egg progression, and since the traditional mosquito eating habitual includes nectar and fruit juice, which has no protein, maximum could desire to drink blood to get the mandatory protein. adult males fluctuate from women, with mouth areas no longer suited for blood sucking. Mosquito larvae, "blood worms" or "wrigglers," advance suspended in stagnant swimming pools of water and breathe air by using siphons of their tails. The mosquito undergoes finished metamorphosis, dealing with 4 different stages in its existence cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and person — a technique that alter into first defined via the Greek fact seeker Aristotle. The length of the 1st 3 stages relies upon on the species and temperature. Culex tarsalis could finished its existence cycle in 14 days at 20 °C (sixty 8 °F) and purely ten days at 25 °C (seventy seven °F). some species have a existence cycle of as low as 4 days or as much as a minimum of one month. The larvae are the "wrigglers" or "wigglers" latest in puddles or water-crammed boxes. those breathe air by using a siphon on the tail end. The pupae are almost as energetic because of the fact the larvae, yet breathe by using thoracic "horns" related to the thoracic spiracles. maximum larvae feed on microorganisms, yet some are predatory on different mosquito larvae. some mosquito larvae, mutually with those of Wyeomyia stay in unusual situations. those mosquito wigglers stay the two in the water accumulated in epiphytic bromeliads or interior water saved in carnivorous pitcher flowers. Larvae of the genus Deinocerites stay in crab holes alongside the edge of the sea.

mosquito life cycle is: egg, larva (they eat other little bug things in the watter. i've even seen them eat other mosquito larva), mosquito adult, death ;p. they live in the water for quite a while too. i think its longer then out of it, but i dunno for sure. and only the female adults drink blood. i've seem them fly at least 200ft above ground when climbing. i dunno how high up they can live though. like altitude wise.
