I've heard of them and I know they involve two DJs mixing but other than that, I don't get it.

Well since I've seen a few myself, I can tell you that a DJ battle is a lot like a freestyle rap battle, but the competitors use records, turntables and mixers instead of rap lyrics. It goes like this...

The announcer/MC gives each DJ a limited amount of time (usually anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes) to show off their skills. They take turns going back and forth a few times (at least twice per DJ) per round, and afterwards, either a panel of judges or the crowd decides the winner. The winner goes on to the next stage and the cycle repeats until there's a final winner.

I'm sure if you look up "DJ battle" on YouTube, they'll have some examples for you to check out.
