I noticed it soon after the car temp. was above normal. I haven't driven it since then. I'm assuming the worst, which is to replace the motor itself but I can't find a good website that specifically has what i need. The car is a "1998 pontiac grand prix SE" . Also, how much will this typically cost?
Thanks

From what i have a read , there about about three ways this can go . First replacing the engine is an option. I would recomend a jasper rebuit engine . second you could repair your engine, that would involve the cylinder heads to be removed and sent to a machine shop to be magnafluxed , means to check for cracks , if the head or heads are ok depending if you have a v-6 or a 4 cylinder . you could replace the head gaskets and be good to go again the average you should be looking to pay about $500 to $600 to have head gasket replaced .http://www.jasperengines.com/ here's the link where yiu can find your engine if you decide to go new it's about $2600 for a new engine from jasper , and it's gonna cost about $500-$750 to have the engine installed, i know this sounds like alot but sepending on the condition of your car this option sure does beat a new car payment .I hope all your gonna have to do is have the head checked and replace the head gaskets that gonna be the least expensive of all . good luck hope this helps .

Loki is right about the 3.4 and 3.1 engine they are also marked as 3400 and 3100 on the upper intake... Those engine are known for intake gasket leak. Which is caused by Dex Cool antifreeze the color on that stuff is orange. What happens is that over time it becomes acidic and eats the intake gasket which is made from Rubber and plastic. And the Dex cool antifreeze does not last 5 years like it claims.. What you need to do is have the intake gasket replaced. Which the gasket costs about $70 and the rest is labor which can run up to $700.... I recommend that you have the shop flush the old Dex cool out and replace the themostat and put in the Original Green type antifreeze to prevent this happing again. I have Done this to a 1999 Grand Am with a 3400 engine and have not had a problem since. you many want to google Dex Cool antifreeze law suit too..

You probably have the 3.8 3800 with the plastic intake these are common for burning melting at the egr port. You will need to get a new upper intake and gaskets and flush the oil. Also I have seen the leek bad enough after you shut it off, it fills 1 or more cylinder up and the engine will not turn over. So I would also remove all the plugs and rotate the engine with a wrench

If you've seen that the engine oil is emulsified (greyish), then yeah, you have coolant in your engine oil. This is atypical of a blown head gasket.
It doesn't mean that you'd need a new engine. Just a new head gasket, as well as an engine flush. You might want to look carefully and make sure you don't have oil in the coolant also.
If you're planning to take it to a shop to have it done, they can give you a pretty good idea of the cost.
Good luck.
