I believe much of this "prudishness" stems from the fact that America is still, despite what some say, a pretty religious country. In Europe, religion has become less an active part of life and more a historical, cultural marker. In the Unites States, much of the country is steeped in a conservative Christian ideology that pervades the social realm. Sex as a result is more taboo.

America is a highly religious society - more so in years past but there is still a strong subconscious belief system. For some reason, we've been taught that nudity is immoral. Nothing could be further from the truth. Nudity itself isn't wrong; there are actually allowances for nudity in the scriptures. As long as there is a sizable number of people who believe this, most politicians will see nude-friendly legislation as a career suicide. Hopefully, times are changing for the better!

American unlike most of California was raised to have a great degree of morals from the very foundation of our nation. California was settled by mostly glory hunters in the time the gold rush and also by a large population of Mexicans seeking there wealth in the gold fields. Thus the Mexican population influenced the culture. Also California had a been a melting pot of immigration for the last 100 years or so also. So we find the Asian Influences in California more then in most places. Then there is the movie industry that promotes ridious living and nudity as a way of life. So why does the rest of America not have the same lack of morals as California. Because we have morals we seek to live by a moral code. We do not seek to live in the fiction world of California nor the TV. We perfer to be clean both in our minds body and spirit. If you want to live in perversion that is your call we do not desire to wallow in the pig sty with you.

I think it is a result of American advertising putting so much emphasis on cleanliness, shiny teeth, etc. These type of inhibition creating mind warpers are a drag on nudity and sex. Not so in countries like Germany. If you have body oder accompanying an encounter it is called the smell of love.

Because, as the youngest nation around, we have had a more conservative upbringing for a longer period of time. But, from what I can see, we're fast catching up to the loose morals of the rest of the civilized world! Open sex and free-for-all! Even gays and lesbians too!
Too bad!!!

maximum human beings are no longer descended from the Puritans, so your excuse of it being from their Puritan forefathers is basically organic lazy questioning on the area of you Europeans. of course you have in no way watched American television in case you think of human beings are not comfortable with nudity/intercourse. My wager is you have based all your ideals approximately human beings on television shows like the Simpsons, pals and 90210. Am I ideal?

Why are Americans generally thought to be prude about nudity?
That's a lie - "Girls Gone Wild," "Boys Gone Wild," "party girls" and "party boys."

Just stereotyping... one person does it, and suddenly the whole world thinks its that way for America. For example, all the idiots that go into foreign nations, make fools of themselves, and make the government have to clean it up. Everyone now believes all Americans are war mongers and idiots..

well they certainly are prudes about their own bodies...but not necessarily of others...maybe it's the advertising media depiction of perfect bodies (of poreless 12 year olds) that does it. Makes them feel inferior.
