your looking for the invasion of Sicily. where Patton wanted to take Palermo from the get go. and Monty wanted to take Messina but Monty got to Eisenhower first. and got his plan while the Americans were supposed to protect the Brits flanks. but Patton took Palermo any way along with Messina lol. but these two both had big and i mean big egos. they clashed the entire war like this. but Patton was well respected by the Germans that's how he was able to sell the decoy force before d-day.

First they fought hard after D Day during the liberation of France because Patton thought Monty was a coward and did not attack sufficiently the Germans and then they fought about the strategy of invading Germany, Monty winning over Patton with his disastrous strategy to attack by the North (the Netherlands) in an operation called Market Garden which was one of the most costly battles of WW2 in Western Europe. It is during this operation that the Allies saw the first German fighter jets and they were terrified.

This was actually an ongoing conflict. The frution to the situation came when Patton's forces were moving in on Berlin. Monty had a nice tidy arrangement similar to a proper tea party as to who should arrive first and the proper order of protocol for arrival. Patton was never one to hold a teacup politely with a properly raised finger. He saw a hole in the German defenses and punched the daylights out of it without permission and got the job done. Monty promptly whined about being upstaged, and Patton was removed from command.
