Brutal honesty or patronizing untruths?

Patronizing untruths, and I would go so far as to say that I don't accept them at all. Rejecting that which you know in your heart to be false is an EXTREMELY healthy practice, and a difficult one at that. Brutal honesty is always tough, but can you get back on the horse? Once you've coddled your bruised ego, do you set to right the wrong? Or do you need the Waaambulance to come rescue you and take you away from all the bad, mean, people?

Brutal honesty. At least you know where the person is coming from and where you stand with them. With patronizing untruths there is no foundation and no way to know where you stand.

Good question!

How about patronizing honesty or brutal untruths? It has a certain ring to it?

First of all, the honesty should be solicited, that is to say, the other should ask for it, it should not be dished out simply because you think you are smarter or better than they are. Secondly, the comments must be constructive, not destructive. It is important when telling someone an unpleasant truth to be tactful and thoughtful of the feelings of the other. One gains nothing by breaking down the spirit of another. In fact, it may cause permanent damage. And no one has the right to do that.
If the other party seems fragile, better to stick to patronizing untruths.

I think we all feel we could accept brutal honesty, but how would we really react if we got it? I think its more that we would 'prefer' it to patronizing untruths, but I think we need to be prepared before we get the honest answers.

brutal honesty.. because I'd rather know the truth than be lied to.. However I'd rather someone be brutally honest after I've requested their opinion. If they just started berating me, I'd start to think it was more cruel than helpful.
