if you only reduce calories and do not excercise, the body will go into starvation mode and lower its metabolism. then, when you emerge from this starvation state, you will gain weight back faster than you lost it.
you have to excercise - muscle building is the best because it increases your metabolism at rest (muscle burns more calories than fat)
you will feel better if you ecercise too - unlike being on a diet which usually makes people crabby.
if you want, go ahead and do a grapefruit diet fast (take grapefruits and blend them up and drink a few grapefruit slushes every day for a week) ..but 100% of the evidence shows you'll just gain the weight back.

how foolish a question!!!!!!!!!!! Didn't you pay attention in health class?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
In order for weight lose to begin you much first reach a point in exercise where your body's heart rate is increased so more oxegyn is flowing through your body, then you begin to use the energy that has been stored as fat(this is concidered aerobic exercise), which will over time cause you to lose the weight the in conjection with that to avoid flabby skin afterwards you need to lift weights to convert your fat over to muscle which will weigh more but in the end you will become thinner because muscle is more dense that fat (anaerobic exercise respectively)
