I have to solve on sum which include this symbol. It's called sigma. if u ppl hv any info plz. contact me as soon as possible.

I need help in Human resource accounting subject. I have one foprmula which has this sigma sign & don't know how to solve it. I ma having exams in next week so ppl. plz. hurry.

sigma means "the sum of" if it is in front of something that means you add it up

Sigma means summation. It is typically written in front of a formula which evaluates to some term, and has written beneath it the name of a "running variable" and an initial value of that variable, and above it the maximum value of that variable. The running variable typically appears in the formula, and the whole thing means to evaluate the formula for each value of the running variable and add them all up. For example, the sum of the first ten odd numbers might be written:
Sigma (i = 0 to 9) (2i+1) = 1+3+5+7+9+11+13+15+17+19.
Another example: Sigma (i = 1 to infinity) (2^(-i)) = 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + ... = 1.

Sigma (written as vertical W) represents sum. Sigma x means sum of all the values of x i.e.
Sigma x = x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + ............
Further, while writing Sigma x, the properties of x will be defined. For example, Sigma x, with x=1 just below the sigma, and say 10 above the sigma .... x is an integer ...... this means, sum of all integers from 1 to 10.

sigma is the greek letter s. We use it to stand for the word "sum". So, if you want to add or sum a group of numbers, you can use a Sigma to indicate the sum.

Example: Find the average age of the people in your classroom.

Instead of writing out an equation with everyone's age and then dividing by a count of the number of people, you could write:

Average Age = Sigma (age) / (count)

This way, you can represent a very long equation with just a few symbols.

Sigma when used in the upper case is standard summation notation (much like upper case pi for product notation)
There will be a parameter with its starting point below sigma (eg. as i = 1 , etc.) and the end point (eg. i=n or simply n) above sigma.
This denotes the sum of the expression infront of sigma for the given values of the parameter.

In lower case, it must be mentioned that sigma denotes standard deviation.

There's 12 months/year. To add all the costs for each month you could write:

cost(jan)
cost(feb)
...etc
cost(dec)
-------------
add to get total.

Now, if you call
cost for jan is cost(1)
cost for feb is cost(2)
...
cost for dec is cost(12)

then you could use sigma:

total= ∑ for k=1 to 12, of cost(k)
(you usually write the index, k=1 on the bottom and k=12 on the top of the ∑)

then you'd get
cost(1)+cost(2)+ ....+ cost(12) or the total for the year.
