Many people get so "locked in" to one particular car, political party, or anti-virus program that they can't be objective. Sadly, when it comes to anti-virus programs (and anti-spyware programs) no program is 100% effective 100% of the time. That's why many people even recommend using two or even three different AV programs to catch what the others might have missed. (Just don't use them at the same time or your computer could crash.) This help article may be of interest to you:

Peter Norton developed his product back in the early days of computing and he was a pioneer in antivirus software. There was virtually no competition and through word of mouth and a great marketing plan, Norton became the industry leader. Eventually, the company was bought by Symantec. By then, many other companies were competing in the AV marketplace and the original Norton AV had to become "new and improved". Well, the "improved" part is open to debate. It's not enough to have just a good AV program, now companies have to throw in other features that rob system memory, slow things down, and maybe even prevent you from visiting your favorite sites or running your favorite applications until you spend countless hours tweaking and modifying the AV program.

The "best" AV program is the one you use. If you select a program that has been "Certified by Independent Testing Organizations" including ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs, and certified by Virus Bulletin to detect 100% of viruses "in the wild", you will be well protected (and most major AV progams have these certifications.)

Norton cons are that it is a bit if a system hog and it requires you to subscribe to updates. Norton pros are that it does have an extensive network and a very reliable virus research center. Using many antivirus programs is not a good idea as they can collide from time to time. I use one that was made by geeks, and you get updates regularly, and one that runs through the Web as a second option. AVG Free Antivirus and Housecall thru Trendmicro. USing these two regularly with the free updates is the best solution. Also use Spybot Search and Destroy. These are all mostly free, but worth making a donation or whatever they ask. And stay informed with the YAHOO Computer Geek Club.

Who on earth said that? Norton is just popular because its probably the oldest anti-virus software out there. It has never been 'better' than other anti-viruses. Even, its popularity is decreasing slowly but steadily. Kaspersky(among paid ones) and AVG(among free ones) are gaining enormous market share.

norton has a good reputaion when it comes to detection and removal of virus's etc..
independant test (various benchmark test) prove this,
while it may not detect 100% of everything none will as new ones pop uo daily.
it may have issues with cpu resource uses but i'd rather know i'm protected than have something that doesn't detect as much or doesnt remove either

I wouldnt say it was a good program at all..It consumes a LOT of resources on your pc and will really slow it down..try something else such as CA Internet Security Suite

Because every month, it reminds you to update it so if ever there's a new kind of virus that will enter your computer, you can make sure that your computer is still safe...

It is not. They are all the same. And besides, these ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE MANUFACTURERS are the ones spreading the viruses to begin with, just so that they can create a need for their product!
