These answers are making it too complicated. Basically, if you are expereincing coping problems in dealing with everyday life, and even with your inner thoughts and turmoil, then go ahead and make an appointment to talk with a therapist. It's not a huge, lifelong commitment, or anything. And you'll know after a session or two if it is going to be of any help to you. Undergoing therapy is not really much different than deciding to take a class, or go to a seminar, after all, since they all deal with simply seeking an avenue to better yourself.

definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
A therapist can offer alternatives, a psychiatrist prescribes drugs....
there are alternatives to both. A loving relationship can listen and offer suggestions without critisism or judgement. therapists charge you for them to listen to you, true friends will listen at no charge. offer thier opinion only when asked.

If you have a nagging doubt and your friends' advice does not help or if you notice your views and opinions are not compatible with the view of those around you, or if your behaviour is repeatedly criticised by anyone, or when you cannot bear human companionship, that is the time to check out what's going on.
