my car is a '99 dodge durango, 5.2L engine. this doesnt always happen, could it be the battery?

It sounds like the starter bendix (star shaped gear) is not engaging the flywheel properly. This could be the solenoid or the starter motor itself (they are probably integrated on this model) You can pull the starter and take it to a starter repair shop and have it tested.

check your clutch might need to tighten it or take the slack out
