I am assuming you are just starting out and you do not have a portfolio or testimonials, rather than hiding poor quality workmanship.

In the first case...Cheaper prices than competitors at first allows you to get word-of-mouth recommendations....the BEST advertisement. Raise your prices as you gain experience.

Newspaper classified ads.

If you've done the work before, go and take pictures... even if its work you have done at your own house.

Personally I would have a hard time hiring someone (depending on the job) who couldn't show me or let me talk to previous customers. ...flowers, mulch..no problem, building a patio...I'd want to see previous projects.

Good luck!

It is hard getting started in a business, but, it is hard getting a job without a resume. You could run an add stating what you will do for a certain amount of money. Print up business cards, and give them out as if your life depended on it. Never give one.If you have an opportunity to hand someone your card, offer them another (don't give them a choice) saying, give this to someone you know. This will make them remember you over the last guy, and they might pass it on to someone. Print up flyer's for your area, say 60 flyer's. Leave one at every house, introducing your new business, and offering the holder of the flyer two hours of work for $5, (be sure to collect them when the work is done). Then you have them to use again, but, you don't want people passing them around to get free help for years. Now you can start building you resume. Take pictures, ask for references, ask if you can give out their name, as an reference

Work for another company in the same business first for a year. If you like what you are doing it will show in your work quality. Work part time in your own business the next year so you have income coming in.
