The tire sizing you are talking about is 2 different systems. think of 33X9.50 as American Standard sizing. just like Americans have SAE Tools
33 is how many inches tall the tire is
9.50 is how many inches wide the tire is.
R specifies the tire as a Radial
15 would be the rim diameter the tire is made to be mounted on.

295/70R15 is Metric Sizing. (there are 25.4MM to an inch)
295 is how may MilliMeters wide the tire is
70 is a percentage number refering to the sidewall. the height of the sidewall is 70% the width of the tire
Again R is Radial and 15 is the rimsize.

http://www.4lo.com has a couple calculation tools on it to help convert the tire size ratings to each other.

If you are being frustrated because you can't find that tires size in a metric it's simply because they don't make a metric equivalent to it. the Closest you will get is a 302/75R15 (33X12.50)

well at 33" tall, 9.50" wide your looking at somewhere around like a 300 by 75 but see they dont make such a thing thats why the use 33 x 9.50...if i remember correctly a 295 series tire is only 29" tall
